Running Toilet – Waste of Water

Running Toilet

Running Toilet

Maintaining a house is not easy and it is expensive. Considering the cost of utilities maintaining a house and keeping everything functioning well is worth every cent. Imagine, if we have a faulty wiring, or a leak in our gas tank or even worst a running toilet, how much these problems may cost us.

Not fixing a running toilet is like throwing money down the drain. It will cost you much more than a regular flush of the toilet. For this reason it is best that you have it fixed soonest.

Having a running toilet fixed may not be as expensive as you think it will cost you compared to the money you will waste if you don’t have it fixed. Sometimes if what is causing the problem needs adjustments or replacements, you yourself can do it. All you have to have are the tools and parts needed. If the problem is a little bit complicated you can call a plumber and have the job done for you.

Here are some of the possible causes of a running toilet:

  • Turn off your water supply and let it sit for a few minutes. Then open the toilet lid to see if the water level has dropped. If this is so the problem is with flush valve. If the water level stayed as is then the problem is with the refill valve.
  • Check position of the fill valve and the tank float. They may need adjustments. Check and see if water is rising above the set limit in your tank. If there is water in the overflow valve you need to repair, adjust or replace your refill valve.
  • Check for faulty flush valve. You may have a loose trap handle or a stopper that needs replacement.
  • Check for leaks in the tank bolts, water valve or drain flapper. They may need replacement or adjustments.

These are just some of the possible causes of running toilet that we can fix ourselves.  It is best to address the problem the soonest possible chance we have so that we won’t have to pay for unnecessary additional charges in our water bill. This is also one way of conserving water.
